A Federal High Court sitting in Katsina has sentenced a woman, Hauwa’u Mukhtar, to death by hanging after convicting her of terrorism-related offences linked to banditry in the state.
Mukhtar was found guilty on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy to commit terrorism and aiding and abetting terrorist activities.
She was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services on September 16, 2023, at Jibia Motor Park in Katsina State while allegedly attempting to deliver ammunition to a suspected bandit leader.
Following her arrest, she was arraigned and prosecuted by the DSS.
Delivering judgment, Justice A.B. Bawale held that the prosecution successfully established its case beyond reasonable doubt, relying on evidence, exhibits and testimonies presented during the trial.
The court subsequently convicted Mukhtar on both counts and sentenced her to death by hanging in accordance with the provisions of the Katsina State Penal Code Law, 2021.
The judgment comes amid intensified efforts by security agencies to curb banditry and terrorism in the North-West region.
The development also follows a similar ruling delivered about two weeks ago by a Federal High Court in Abuja, which sentenced four men to death for their roles in the June 5, 2022, attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, where over 40 worshippers were killed.
Security analysts say the spate of convictions signals a tougher stance by authorities against individuals linked to terror networks, particularly those providing logistics and operational support to armed groups.
