The Kebbi State House of Assembly has received a proposed constitutional amendment to establish state police services for consideration and approval.
The bill was transmitted to the assembly by the National Assembly through a letter dated September 16, 2026, signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, and addressed to the Speaker of the Kebbi Assembly, Salihu Maikasuwa Dangoje.
The Majority Leader of the assembly, Faruku Aliyu Nassarawa Jega read the letter during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Jega said the Senate passed the bill on June 24, 2026, while the House of Representatives passed it on July 23, 2026.
The proposed amendment seeks to provide a constitutional framework for establishing state police services while retaining the Nigeria Police Force as the federal police service.
The letter stated that the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives directed the bill’s transmission to state assemblies in line with Section 9(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
The National Assembly urged the Kebbi Assembly to consider the bill expeditiously and communicate its decision to facilitate the constitutional amendment process.
At least 24 of Nigeria’s 36 state assemblies must approve a constitutional amendment before it can proceed to the President for assent.
The Kebbi Assembly has referred the bill to its Committee on Internal Security for consideration. The committee is expected to deliberate on the proposal and make recommendations to the House.
