Ronald Koeman has resigned as Netherlands head coach following the team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an end to his second spell in charge of the national side.
The 63-year-old announced his decision after the Dutch were knocked out by Morocco in a penalty shootout in the Round of 32.
The match ended 1-1 after extra time before Morocco won 3-2 on penalties in Monterrey.
In a message posted on Instagram, Koeman suggested he may not return to management.

“Looking back on my career, I feel especially proud. I have worked with clubs and people that shaped me and gave me memories that I will cherish for a lifetime,” he wrote.
“We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would write history. That didn’t work out. No-one is more disappointed about that than me.”
Koeman also revealed that recent personal circumstances had influenced his decision.
“The past years have made me realise again that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes.”
His wife, Bartina Koeman, has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Dutch FA condemns racist abuse
Koeman’s resignation came as the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed that players Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville were racially abused on social media after missing penalties against Morocco.
The Dutch federation described the online attacks as discriminatory and unacceptable and said it would pursue legal action against those responsible.
“We find this appalling,” the KNVB said.
“Once a report is filed, legal staff assess whether the statement constitutes a punishable offence. This can lead to a formal complaint being lodged with the Public Prosecution Service, which may then initiate a criminal investigation.”
The federation added: “Football brings together millions of different people, whereas discrimination does the exact opposite. It therefore runs counter to everything football stands for.”
The Netherlands’ World Cup campaign ended earlier than expected despite entering the tournament as one of Europe’s leading contenders, while Koeman’s departure now leaves the Dutch Football Association searching for a new head coach ahead of the next international cycle.
