The Kwara State government has dismissed reports suggesting that nine of its 16 Local Government Areas are under siege by bandits, describing the claim as false and misleading.
The Commissioner for Communications, Mrs. Bolanle Olukoju, stated this in a press release issued in Ilorin on Tuesday, condemning a post by former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, which she said contained inaccurate information about the state’s security situation.
Olukoju said the claim was “totally false” and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents. She urged Obi to take down the post from his official X handle and verify information before sharing it publicly.
“We wish to alert the public to some reckless claims that nine local government areas of Kwara State are under siege by bandits. This is totally false. No local government area is under siege in the state,” the statement read in part.
“The unfortunate challenges we have had in a few areas do not warrant the wicked escalation and fake news which are being promoted by opposition elements in and outside of the state,” she added.
The commissioner further alleged that those spreading the misinformation were “online promoters and equivalence of bandits” working to instill fear in the populace.
She expressed disappointment in Obi’s involvement, noting that “as a statesman,” he should not contribute to spreading panic or falsehoods.
“We request Mr. Peter Obi to bring down the post as it is totally false and inappropriate. We also urge members of the public to avoid sharing unverified information, which may cause panic, confusion, and psychological trauma to the people,” Olukoju said.
She maintained that the Kwara government remains committed to working with security agencies to ensure the safety and stability of all communities across the state.
