The Kwara State Police Command has denied allegations of unlawful detention of a 16-year-old girl in Arandun, Irepodun Local Government Area, saying the action taken followed due process.
The command’s spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, describing reports circulating on social media as misleading.
Public concern had grown after videos surfaced online showing the teenager at a police facility, prompting protests by some residents who believed she had been unjustly arrested.
According to the police, the incident stemmed from a housebreaking and theft complaint reported on April 30 at the Arandun Police Division.
The command said the main suspect, identified as 19-year-old Timothy Aransiola, fled after the report and had been under surveillance.
Police alleged that the suspect’s younger sister, Esther Aransiola, assisted him in evading arrest and was subsequently invited for questioning on May 1 over suspected obstruction.
The statement noted that the teenager was cautioned and interviewed in line with standard procedures before being released to a guardian on bail.
The police maintained that her detention was lawful and brief, dismissing claims that she was held improperly.
It added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect, while urging the public to verify information before sharing to avoid spreading misinformation.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to lawful conduct and the protection of citizens’ rights.
