The Youth Wing of the Labour Party has opened discussions on a proposed political alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and pro-President Bola Ahmed Tinubu support groups ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The proposed alignment, according to a communiqué from the youth leaders, would involve consultations with the APC, Renewed Hope Movement, City Boy Movement and Tinubu Support Groups, with a view to exploring possible collaboration and support for President Tinubu’s re-election.
The proposal emerged during a virtual meeting held on October 2, 2026, at 8:30 p.m., involving Labour Party National Youth Leader, Prince Kennedy Ahanotu; five National Zonal Youth Leaders; and 32 State Youth Leaders.
The meeting focused on the political direction of the party’s youth constituency amid the prolonged crisis within the Labour Party and discussions surrounding the future of youth participation in national politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to the communiqué, several participants expressed dissatisfaction with what they described as inadequate recognition, engagement and support for the youth constituency during and after the 2023 presidential election.
The participants also raised concerns over what they described as the failure to translate the youth constituency’s political efforts during the 2023 election into meaningful opportunities for youth participation and leadership.
The meeting reportedly examined the policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration in areas including human capital development, youth empowerment, economic reforms, infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, agriculture and workers’ welfare.
The communiqué noted that participants expressed varying views on the administration’s policies and their implications for Nigeria’s development.
However, following the deliberations, the youth leaders called on Ahanotu to immediately commence consultations with relevant stakeholders in the APC, Renewed Hope Movement, City Boy Movement and Tinubu Support Groups.
The objective, according to the communiqué, is to explore the prospects of political alignment and possible collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections.
The youth leaders also mandated Ahanotu to facilitate the proposed consultations, stressing the need for broad-based engagement and consensus-building among Labour Party youth leaders.
They further proposed a physical meeting of Labour Party youth leaders in Abuja, on a mutually agreed date, to consider the outcome of the consultations and determine the next steps on the proposed political realignment.
The development signals an emerging discussion within a section of the Labour Party’s youth structure over possible political partnerships ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the communiqué does not indicate that the Labour Party as a whole has formally adopted support for President Tinubu’s re-election. Rather, it records a proposal by participating youth leaders for consultations and possible alignment.
