The Lagos State Government has issued a public health advisory urging residents of Eti-Osa, Ibeju-Lekki and Epe to remain vigilant against the threat of Ebola Virus Disease, amid heightened global concerns over the deadly infection.
The warning, delivered through the Permanent Secretary of Health District III, Dr Monsurat Adeleke, emphasised the need for strict adherence to preventive measures, even as authorities confirmed that no case of the disease has been recorded in Nigeria.
Adeleke said the state had intensified community sensitisation campaigns across the affected districts to curb potential transmission and bolster public awareness.
She described Ebola as a severe and often fatal illness caused by viruses transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected persons or animals, including blood, saliva and vomit.
“Although there is no confirmed Ebola outbreak in Nigeria at this time, vigilance, prompt reporting, adherence to infection prevention measures, and community awareness remain essential to protecting lives,” she said.
The health official warned residents to avoid contact with individuals showing symptoms of illness, as well as dead bodies and wild animals such as bats and monkeys, which are known carriers of the virus.
She also urged the public to maintain strict hygiene practices, including regular handwashing, use of sanitisers and proper cooking of meat, noting that prevention remains the most effective defence against the disease.
According to her, Health District III is collaborating with relevant agencies to strengthen disease surveillance systems, emergency preparedness and response capacity across Eti-Osa, Ibeju-Lekki and Epe.
The renewed alert comes amid reports of isolated Ebola cases in parts of the world, prompting Lagos authorities to take proactive steps to prevent any possible outbreak in Nigeria’s commercial hub.
