A 53-year-old resident of Meiran, Lagos State, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse in a drainage channel during rainfall.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) said Monday was arrested on September 9, for dumping waste in a drain during the rain.
According to the agency, she was arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence and was subsequently sentenced to one month in prison.
LAWMA warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly the dumping of refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.
The agency said such acts constitute environmental offences and attract sanctions under the law.
“Residents are urged to dispose of their waste responsibly and through approved channels,” LAWMA said in a statement on Thursday.
The Authority added that it would continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.
Monday’s sentencing comes over a year that six individuals were sentenced to one month in prison for illegal waste disposal in Lagos.
LAWMA’s enforcement team apprehended two of the offenders at Egbeda for dumping refuse on the road median and four others at Dopemu for similar infractions.
The convicts— aged between 25 and 40 – were arraigned before the Bolade Magistrate Court in Oshodi, where they pleaded guilty to the offences.
