Notable Yoruba actor, Laide Olabanji has criticised what he described as tribalism in Nigerians’ reactions to the rising price of petrol arguing that some people who previously complained about fuel prices now appear more accepting of higher prices because a politician from their preferred ethnic group is in power.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Olabanji compared an earlier petrol price of ₦65 per litre with the current price of about ₦1,500 per litre.
He questioned why some Nigerians who were dissatisfied with lower prices under a previous administration would tolerate significantly higher prices under the current government.
He wrote:
“How do you allow tribalism to damage your brain? When another tribe person was there you buy petrol ₦65 per litre, but you are in pain then, but your tribe man was in charge now, while you buy 1 liter of petrol for ₦1,500 but you are very okay with it.
“I’m very sure you will suffer it, as you don’t want the progress of this country may you never know peace in your life.”
