Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has said he rejects Israel’s occupation of southern Lebanon and foreign interference in the country as another round of talks between Lebanon and Israel begins in Washington on Tuesday.
US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio called Aoun to discuss the ceasefire in southern Lebanon and a mechanism to monitor its implementation, as Israel doubles down on its occupation, killing two.
- Meanwhile, Trump said that Iran has agreed to allow nuclear inspections long into the future, despite statements from Iran that it has not done so.
The claims come as Iran said technical talks with the US in Switzerland have been completed, with $12bn in frozen Iranian funds set to be released alongside the temporary suspension of sanctions of Iranian oil, according to Iranian state media.
Four working groups have been established to progress the 60-day period of talks with the US aimed at ending the war in the region between the two, including on “Sanctions Termination, Nuclear Affairs, Reconstruction and Economic Development, and Monitoring and Implementation,” Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi was quoted as saying by IRNA.
