Libyan teachers on Thursday staged a protest at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tripoli, demanding action on their financial and professional concerns, local media reported.
The protest was organised by the General Union of Teachers after a 15-day sit in that began on Sept. 13, at the start of the academic year.
The union escalated the action to an open ended strike on Sept. 27, saying authorities had failed to take concrete measures to address the teachers’ demands.
According to local media reports, the teachers are demanding unified salary scales, payment of outstanding dues and allowances, comprehensive health insurance and enforcement of laws protecting their rights.
while the Ministry of Education has directed education monitors in municipalities to reopen schools and receive students, assuring that efforts are underway to address the teachers’ demands.
The protest has intensified pressure on the government to reach an agreement with the teachers’ unions and resolve the dispute.
The strike, now in its second week, has continued to disrupt academic activities and suspend classes in affected schools.
