A gunman has killed eight children, including seven of his own, and injured two others in a shocking domestic attack in the southern United States, authorities have confirmed.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning in Shreveport, where the suspect carried out shootings across two homes before fleeing the scene.
Police identified the attacker as Shamar Elkins. He later died after a confrontation with officers during a pursuit, according to the Shreveport Police Department.
Spokesperson Chris Bordelon said the victims ranged in age from one to about 12 years old. One of the injured adults is believed to be the mother of the suspect’s children.
Authorities said the suspect fled the scene and carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint, prompting a police chase. Officers eventually opened fire, leading to his death.
Investigators have yet to establish a motive but described the attack as a domestic incident. Bordelon noted that the suspect had previous contact with law enforcement, including a 2019 firearms-related arrest.
“This is an extensive scene, unlike anything most of us have ever seen,” he said.
Reacting to the tragedy, Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux described it as one of the worst incidents the city has experienced.
Governor Jeff Landry also expressed grief, saying he and his wife were heartbroken and praying for those affected.
The shooting adds to growing concerns over gun violence in the United States. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, there have already been more than 100 mass shootings this year, resulting in dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries.
