A Nigerian man has shared how his friend’s planned marriage ended after she disagreed with her fiancé over contributing financially to their wedding expenses.
The man, identified as @MrOlibaba on X, formerly Twitter, recounted the experience while narrating how the woman, who was 35 at the time, had been preparing to marry a man who was ready to settle down with her.
According to him, the couple had already gotten engaged and their family introduction had taken place before they began making preparations for the traditional marriage.
‘They Had Called Off the Marriage’
The man explained that he was shocked when his friend later informed him that the wedding had been called off.
“I had a friend who was 35 at the time. She was dating a man who was ready to marry her.
“The engagement had been done, the introduction had taken place, and they were already preparing for the traditional marriage.
“A few weeks later, she told me they had called off the marriage. I was shocked and asked what happened,” he wrote.
He revealed that the disagreement started after the prospective groom repeatedly asked his fiancée about her financial contribution towards the wedding.
‘She Wasn’t Willing to Contribute Financially’
According to @MrOlibaba, the man wanted to know how much his fiancée was willing to contribute so they could plan the wedding expenses together.
“She told me the man kept asking what her contribution would be towards the wedding. Like he wanted to know how much she was willing to bring so they could plan the wedding together,” he stated.
However, the woman reportedly told her friend that she was not willing to contribute financially to the wedding.
“The lady said she wasn’t willing to contribute financially to the wedding. Her position was that the man should handle the wedding expenses himself. Perhaps she could cover some expense and not him making it a mandatory,” he wrote.
‘The Man Eventually Called Off the Marriage’
The X user said the disagreement continued until the prospective groom eventually decided to end the relationship.
“The back and forth and disagreement were a lot, the man eventually called off the marriage,” he stated.
He added that the initial drinks presented during the family introduction were returned, marking the end of the relationship.
“The initial drink they brought for introduction was returned. That was the end of the relationship,” he wrote.
‘The Guy Got Married to Another Woman’
Three years after the failed marriage, the man said he learnt that his former friend’s fiancé had married another woman.
“Three years later, I heard the guy got married to another woman,” he stated.
He added that his friend remained unmarried at the time of his post.
“Unfortunately the lady who is my friend is still single today,” he wrote.
