A young man suspected of attempting to steal cables from a transformer has reportedly died after being electrocuted along Trademore Road in Lugbe, Abuja.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, with the man reportedly found crouched and lifeless near the transformer. His body was said to be stiff, suggesting he may have been electrocuted when power was restored to the area.
Residents said there had been no electricity supply in the area on Thursday night before the incident.
The incident attracted residents, who expressed concern over the activities of cable vandals across parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
Rasheed Ogunyemi, a resident of Iddo Seriki along Airport Road, said residents in his area frequently contribute money to repair their transformer, only for vandals to return and cut the cables.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident and said the deceased’s remains had been evacuated to a mortuary in Gwagwalada for an autopsy.
The incident has since triggered mixed reactions online, with some users condemning cable theft while others questioned the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
