Man prays court to assist him recover N2m dowry

A businessman, Khalid Bashir, on Tuesday, prayed a Shari’a Court II sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, to assist him recover N2 million from his wife, Aisha Usman.

Bashir made the plea after his wife prayed for divorce in court through Khul’i, a type of marriage where women return dowry in exchange for their freedom.

He said he has a voice recording of his mother in-law where she told her daughter to accept the N2 million as dowry, adding that he is ready to present it in court.

He prayed the court to compel his mother in-law to appear in court and testify.

Earlier, Bashir’s wife had told the court, through her counsel, Fatima Usman, that she was ready to return N500,000 dowry she received.

She said even though Bashir gave Usman N2 million, only N500,000 was pronounced as dowry, the remaining N1.5 million was used for set of boxes known as “Kayan Lefe” and other wedding expenses.

She explained that the wedding took place in December 2025 in Nigeria, with the wife residing in Saudi Arabia.

After listening to both parties, the Judge, Yakubu Abdullahi, asked if the defendant has witnesses and he answered in the affirmative.

He then adjourned the matter until July 15 for the defendant to present his witnesses.
