Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has approved a comprehensive restructuring of the state’s Forest Guard as part of efforts to strengthen security.
According to a statement by his media aide, Uche Anichukwu, the reform includes raising the guards’ salaries to a minimum of N80,000, in line with the new state minimum wage.
The governor also ordered a clampdown on illegal logging, directing the arrest and prosecution of anyone caught felling immature trees or engaging in deforestation.
State Commander of the Forest Guard, Akinbayo Olasoji, disclosed this during stakeholder meetings across the three senatorial zones.
The engagements with local government chairmen, traditional rulers, town unions, farmers, hunters, vigilantes, and youth groups aimed to ensure transparency and community participation in recruitment.
Olasoji said applicants must be of proven integrity and endorsed by their traditional rulers and town union leaders. Training for the first batch will begin later this month under the supervision of the National Security Adviser’s office.
