Michael Kayode has revealed that he only discovered he had been called up to the Italy national team after the final whistle of his club’s victory over Chelsea.
The defender said the news, which he found on his phone immediately after the game, made an already memorable occasion even more emotional.
> “I didn’t know about the Italy call-up before the game [against Chelsea]; I found out at the final whistle, on my phone. It was an incredible emotion, especially after such a big win.”
Kayode, who expressed his pride at being selected, added:
> “I think Italy have always been a great national team, and playing here is an honour.”
