The contest over the leadership of the Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives took a new turn on Saturday as members of the G-60 Caucus firmly rejected calls for a fresh election to fill the position of Minority Leader.
The opposition lawmakers insisted that Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere remains the duly nominated candidate for the office.
They argued that the nomination process had already been concluded in accordance with established procedures.
According to the group, Ugochinyere secured the support of an overwhelming majority of minority members during the nomination, making any proposal for a fresh election unnecessary and contrary to the expressed will of the caucus.
The G-60 lawmakers further maintained that the only outstanding issue is the verification of signatures submitted in support of the nomination, stressing that once the verification process is completed, the nomination should be recognised and implemented.
They warned against attempts to reopen a process they described as settled, noting that such moves could undermine the collective decision already reached by the majority of Minority members.
The caucus reiterated its commitment to democratic principles, internal party cohesion, and respect for parliamentary procedures, while urging all stakeholders to uphold the integrity of the nomination process and allow due process to prevail.
