Musk Spends $276m To Help US Ruling Party Keep Congress — Report

Billionaire businessman Elon Musk has donated at least $276m to Republican groups and his own political action committee since July to help the party retain control of the United States Congress, according to a report by The New York Times.

The newspaper first reported the figures on Monday, citing Musk’s political spending ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. A spokesman for Musk’s America PAC subsequently confirmed the figures, according to Reuters.

The Republican Party, which includes US President Donald Trump, currently controls both chambers of Congress, the House of Representatives and the Senate. The opposition Democratic Party is seeking to win control of one or both chambers in the elections.

According to Reuters, Musk’s total spending on the 2026 election cycle has reached approximately $366m, making him likely the biggest individual political donor in this year’s races.

Of the $276m donated since July, $158m went to the Senate Leadership Fund, a political action committee supporting Republican Senate candidates, while $20m went to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which backs Republican candidates for the House of Representatives.

Musk’s America PAC received another $76m to support Republican candidates in seven battleground states and nearly three dozen House races.

The Republican Governors Association and the Lone Star Liberty PAC each received $10m, while the Republican Attorneys General Association received $2m, according to Reuters.

The midterm elections will determine the composition of Congress for the remainder of Trump’s current term. The outcome will affect the administration’s ability to advance legislation on issues including taxation, government spending and other domestic policies.

Musk’s political spending also comes amid calls by Democratic lawmakers for investigations into government contracts held by SpaceX, the aerospace company he leads, and his previous role overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency under Trump.

Musk spent approximately $290m during the 2024 US election cycle, when he supported Trump and other Republican candidates, Reuters reported.
