The National Association of Microfinance Banks (NAMB) has ushered in a new leadership era with the inauguration of Dr. Adenrele Oni as its National President at the association’s 16th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and National Working Committee (NWC) inauguration held in Abuja on Saturday, July 25, 2026.
Taking over the reins, Dr. Oni pledged to strengthen the impact of Nigeria’s microfinance banking sector, while urging the Federal Government to intensify support for Microfinance Banks (MFBs) through increased interventions and a more enabling regulatory framework. According to him, such measures are critical to accelerating financial inclusion, empowering small businesses, and stimulating sustainable economic growth.
He stressed that microfinance banks remain vital partners in the Federal Government’s economic reform agenda, particularly in expanding access to finance, reducing poverty, and driving grassroots economic development.
“Microfinance banks have contributed significantly to the Federal Government’s reform efforts aimed at transforming the economy, promoting financial inclusion, and alleviating poverty. From where we started to where we are today, the progress is undeniable,” Dr. Oni stated.
As part of his vision, the new NAMB President unveiled plans to scale up nationwide advocacy and public enlightenment campaigns to strengthen public confidence in the microfinance sector and deepen awareness of its role in national development and inclusive economic prosperity.
Earlier in his remarks, the Immediate Past National President of NAMB, Alhaji Abubakar Adamu Ahmad, attributed the association’s achievements to sustained collaboration with key regulators, including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC). He noted that their support has been instrumental in enhancing the resilience and growth of the industry.
The event also featured the inauguration of the new National Working Committee and drew key stakeholders from across the financial services sector. Among dignitaries present were the Immediate Past President, Alhaji Abubakar Adamu Ahmad; a representative of the Managing Director of Moniepoint MFB, Bemigho Awala; the newly inaugurated National President, Dr. Adenrele Oni; and the National First Vice President, Benjamin Mapac.
The AGM and leadership transition mark a significant milestone for Nigeria’s microfinance banking industry, reinforcing institutional continuity, visionary leadership, and a renewed commitment to advancing financial inclusion, empowering underserved communities, and positioning microfinance banks as critical drivers of sustainable economic development.
