The Director, Abuja School Of Social and Political Thought, Sam Amadi, has decried that Nigeria’s National Assembly has turned legislation into a tool for self-aggrandizement.
Amadi said this on Thursday during a live appearance in an interview on Arise Television.
He said that the development has resulted in the growing crisis driven by exclusion and leaving out some individuals and potentially those who intend to participate.
“The National Assembly is turning legislation into a tool for self-aggrandizement. Whether for the executive arm or for themselves, the consequence is a growing crisis driven by exclusion.
“However, by definition, there is nothing wrong with the National Assembly crafting rules to structure hierarchy in any particular way.
“The Senate, like the House of Representatives and other institutions, are guided by the constitutional provision. So what has happened in this case basically is that the senate is free under the constitution to self-regulate, and the rules have many components.
“But we are seeing a tendency in this new National Assembly to make laws that are particularistic, focused on individuals or events.
“Look at the Electoral Act. When they crafted the issue around nobody can leave for a political party within a particular time frame, they targeted some people. And it’s like Adams Oshiomhole and all those who are complaining today, were not complaining when they were turning out laws that are specifically targeted at some people,” he said.
