The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, has reinforced its commitment to developing indigenous engineering talent by rewarding outstanding innovations at the maiden edition of the Nigerian Engineering Olympiad, with the overall winning team receiving a N50 million grand prize.
Team Mavericks from Modibbo Adama University emerged as the overall winner after impressing judges with its Sarafa Community Security Alert, an innovative community-based rapid alert system designed to enhance emergency response during security incidents.
The victory earned the team a N50 million cash prize, while the university’s Faculty of Engineering will receive a newly constructed Centre of Excellence Building sponsored by the NCDMB as part of efforts to strengthen engineering education and research.
The competition also recognised other exceptional innovations from Nigerian universities. Team Aurora from University of Ibadan secured second place, winning N30 million alongside engineering equipment valued at N75 million. Team Fortizo of University of Jos claimed third position with a N20 million cash prize and engineering equipment worth N50 million.
Team Flameless from University of Nigeria also received N10 million for developing an innovative flare-gas-to-electricity solution aimed at converting gas that would otherwise be flared into useful electrical energy.
The maiden Olympiad attracted 375 project submissions from 984 students representing 80 tertiary institutions across the country, with participants presenting practical engineering solutions to challenges in security, healthcare, agriculture, energy and industrial development.
Speaking at the event, the NCDMB reaffirmed that youth development, innovation and entrepreneurship remain central to its strategic priorities, noting that the Board will continue to invest in programmes that build local human capital, promote technological advancement and accelerate Nigeria’s industrial growth.
The Board commended all participating teams for demonstrating creativity, technical excellence and the immense potential of Nigerian youths to develop home-grown solutions to national development challenges.
