The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has declared an inmate wanted after he escaped from custody during a road accident in Yobe State.
The incident occurred on April 13 when a vehicle transporting inmates from Potiskum to Damaturu was involved in a crash.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the Public Relations Officer of the Yobe State Command, Abdullahi Adamu, the escape happened during rescue operations at the scene of the accident.
He confirmed that the inmate fled while efforts were ongoing to assist victims of the crash.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service, Yobe State Command, has confirmed the escape of an inmate from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Potiskum,” the statement read.
Adamu explained that the inmate, identified as Dahiru Mohammed, 30, from Askiwari village in Tarmuwa Local Government Area, escaped amid the confusion at the accident scene.
He was admitted into custody on November 29, 2024, and bears prison number J/1539/24.
The NCoS described him as dangerous and urged members of the public to avoid any form of contact with him.
“The escaped individual is considered dangerous, and members of the public are advised not to have any personal dealings with him,” Adamu warned.
The command also appealed to residents to report any useful information that could lead to his rearrest, including sightings around the Potiskum–Damaturu road.
Members of the public were advised to contact the nearest police station or call designated emergency numbers provided by the command for prompt action.
Authorities further cautioned against harbouring the fugitive, stressing that it is a criminal offence punishable under the law.
The NCoS expressed appreciation for public cooperation in efforts to return the escapee to custody.
