The National Emergency Management Agency has received 123 Nigerian returnees repatriated from Algeria under the Assisted Voluntary Return programme coordinated by the International Organization for Migration in collaboration with the Federal Government.
The returnees arrived at the Cargo Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday aboard a Nesma Airlines flight, NEMA disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to the agency, the exercise formed part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safe, dignified and orderly return of distressed Nigerians stranded abroad.
NEMA said the reception was coordinated by its Lagos Operations Office in partnership with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, the Nigeria Immigration Service and other relevant government agencies.
It stated that the returnees comprised 121 adults, including 112 males and nine females, one female child and one male infant.
The agency added that officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service conducted biometric registration and documentation of the returnees to facilitate proper record-keeping and support their reintegration.
It said the returnees were provided with humanitarian assistance, including food, potable water, medical screening, ambulance services, luggage handling, logistics support, reception and counselling services.
NEMA noted that the intervention reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare and reintegration of returning citizens.
The agency added that it would continue to work with relevant partners to coordinate humanitarian interventions and ensure the safe and dignified return of vulnerable Nigerians.
The latest batch comes nearly a year after NEMA received 104 Nigerian returnees from Algeria under the same Assisted Voluntary Return programme.
