Mr Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, the newly appointed Minister of Power, has promised improved electricity supply across the country within the shortest possible time, news.ng reports.
Tegbe, during his screening and confirmation on the floor of the Senate on Thursday, said that although he will not guarantee a 24-hour electricity supply across the country, he would ensure an increase in power generation in the country.
He said, “What I will tell you, and I will be very honest about it, I will ensure that visible improvement is seen across the country in the shortest time possible. I will commit to meeting our targets for Nigerians.
“We will clarify that distribution is consistent, and it is possible to misarrive. We have caused a lot of issues, making that continue to arouse trust.”
While his predecessors over the years have not been able to make a meaningful impact in the power sector due to inadequate meters and the consistent rise in meter prices, the newly appointed power minister acknowledged the need to increase meter availability for Nigerian homes nationwide.
“But our government is doing extremely well. In the last one year and a half, we are a million metres above the country. We need to ramp up to ensure that we make more progress,” he noted.
While identifying one of the challenges facing the power sector, Tegbe said that the government is trying to create a balanced financial structure to enable improved operations in the sector.
“The governance and fiscal financial structure of this sector remains under pressure. In simple terms, we are trying to work a more balanced system on the further operation of the financial structure,” he added.
