The newly-turbaned title holders in Sokoto State have been urged to uphold the trust placed in them and demonstrate exemplary leadership in service to their people.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who turbaned them, gave the charge on Saturday during the ceremony.
Abubakar, who is also the President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), conferred the traditional titles on 15 individuals.
Addressing the new title holders, the Sultan emphasised the importance of honesty and accountability in leadership, urging them to speak the truth to leaders at all levels, including himself.
He said: “Keep on telling us the truth all the time.
“Whenever we go astray, bring us back on track.
“It is part of your responsibility.”
Abubakar added that leaders must also be prepared to explain their actions where necessary.
“If you insist and we don’t retreat on whatever mission, we will tell you our reason for not retreating,” he stated.
The Sultan reminded the appointees that their primary duty is to serve their subjects faithfully, describing them as his ambassadors who must dedicate themselves to the welfare of the people.
Those turbaned include Umaru S. Abubakar III as Sarkin Arewan Sokoto; Alhaji Haliru S. Abubakar III, Janjunan Sokoto; Alhaji Ya’u Aliyu, Dikkon Sokoto; Alhaji Aliyu Suleiman as Bunun Sokoto; Mu’azu Bello Maiwurno, Wakilin Ayukkan Daular Usmaniyyah; Ahmad Rufa’i Na Dange, Sarkin Tsabta; Alhaji Abdullahi Dan Azumi, Barayan Sarkin Musulmi; and Bello Ibrahim Gusau as Sarkin Malammai.
Others included Abbas Abba Aminu as Sarkin Shariffai; Almustafa Mazuga, Mazugan Sarkin Musulmi; Alhaji U. Ubangari as Zagin Sarkin Musulmi; Nura Umar, Dangaladiman Zagin Sarkin Musulmi; Alhaji Kabiru Maibulo, Sarkin Tamburra; Usman Abdullahi Mustafa as Muhtasibin Sokoto; and Alhaji Shehu Zubairu Tela, Danmalikin Sokoto.
The ceremony was attended by the representative of the Sokoto State Governor, Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Dadi Adare, as well as representatives of the Emirs of Gwandu and Argungu, senior councillors of the Sultanate Council, kingmakers, and other dignitaries.
