Former Senate President and National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has urged Nigerians and political leaders to renew their commitment to national unity, peace, stability and development as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Mark, in a goodwill message to Nigerians, said the anniversary should go beyond celebrating the country’s independence from British colonial rule to provide an opportunity for sober reflection on the nation’s journey and a renewed determination to build a more just and prosperous society.
He said Nigeria had the human and material resources to become a prosperous and globally respected nation, but stressed that the resources must be harnessed responsibly for the common good.
According to him, “Nigeria belongs to all of us,” adding that the country’s diversity should be regarded as a source of strength rather than division.
He said, “We must continue to promote national unity, mutual respect and inclusion, while ensuring that every citizen, regardless of ethnic, religious, political or geographical background, has a sense of belonging.”
The ADC chairman also called for the strengthening of democratic institutions and adherence to the rule of law, saying national interest must take precedence over personal and sectional considerations.
“The Nigeria of our dream is possible if we place national interest above personal and sectional considerations. We must strengthen our democratic institutions, uphold the rule of law and create an environment where our young people can live, work and realise their potential in their own country,” he said.
Mark urged political leaders to regard public office as a solemn trust and an opportunity to serve rather than a platform for personal enrichment.
He also acknowledged the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers, past leaders, members of the armed forces, security agencies and millions of citizens who, he said, had contributed to the survival and growth of the country over the decades.
While acknowledging the challenges confronting the nation, Mark urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the country, saying its strength ultimately lies in the resilience and determination of its people.
He expressed optimism that visionary leadership, responsible citizenship, institutional reforms and renewed patriotism could help Nigeria overcome its difficulties and realise its potential.
“As we celebrate Nigeria at 66, let us renew our faith in our country and recommit ourselves to the task of building the Nigeria we desire and deserve,” Mark said.
“The journey may be challenging, but together, with courage, sacrifice and sincerity of purpose, we can build a nation that future generations will be proud to inherit.”
He congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary and prayed for peace, stability, prosperity and greater unity across the country.
