Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has accused the Federal Government of deliberately instigating turmoil across major opposition parties while the country grapples with worsening security challenges.
Obi made the allegation on Wednesday in a post titled “Now Disgraced Nation” shared on his verified X handle, expressing concern that the nation is drifting into a deeper crisis as attention is diverted to internal party conflicts.
The former Anambra State governor referenced recent violent incidents, including the killing of a senior military officer, the abduction of 25 female students within one week, and a fresh terror attack in Kwara State. He said these developments reinforced global perceptions of Nigeria as a country in distress.
“A few weeks ago, when President Trump described our country as ‘now disgraced,’ many were outraged. Yet, how can we dispute it?” Obi wrote.
He criticized the growing wave of internal disputes in the PDP, Labour Party, SDP, and other political formations, insisting the crises were “deliberately orchestrated by a government that should be embracing everyone so we can unite in this troubling period.”
Obi recalled a contrasting moment under the administration of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. According to him, during a crisis in his then-political party, Yar’Adua instructed INEC Chairman Prof. Maurice Iwu to ensure the stability of all political parties—not just the ruling party—because strong political institutions are essential to democracy.
“What we witness today is the opposite,” he said. “The current government seems more intent on weakening parties than strengthening our democracy, seeking to fragment the PDP, Labour Party, SDP, and others.”
Obi argued that genuine democracies respect opposition, uphold the will of the people during elections, and pursue inclusive governance for peace and prosperity.
He concluded his post with his familiar call for hope and national renewal: “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
