Nigerian political commentator Reno Omokri has sparked fresh debate after describing Nigeria as a safe country, following reports that the Portuguese Ambassador to Nigeria drove from Abuja to Bauchi and back without an armed escort.
The comment came after the diplomatic journey was highlighted as an example of confidence in Nigeria’s road security and general safety conditions.
“Nigeria is a safe country,” Omokri stated, linking his assertion to the ambassador’s uneventful trip across several states.
His remarks have since generated mixed reactions online, with Nigerians divided over whether the incident truly reflects the state of security in the country.
While some users saw the ambassador’s movement as a positive sign, others argued that isolated experiences cannot be used to generalize national security conditions, pointing to ongoing cases of insecurity in different regions.
