Technology has finally done what long speeches and endless security meetings have struggled to achieve. The surprising part is not that seven suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP commanders were arrested.
The real surprise is that they reportedly completed one of the world’s largest religious pilgrimages and made it all the way back to Nigeria before the system caught up with them.
According to the Minister of Interior, the suspects were arrested at Katsina airport as they returned from the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage and were handed over to the DSS.
He credited the arrests to Nigeria’s newly integrated digital identity and border management system, explaining that the National Identity database now communicates with immigration records and international security platforms.
If confirmed, it would be a notable example of technology helping security agencies identify individuals of interest at the border.
Even so, the announcement leaves difficult questions hanging in the air. If these men were already known commanders, how were they able to travel out of the country in the first place, complete the pilgrimage and board a flight back without being intercepted earlier.
Were they already on watchlists or did they only become visible after the system was upgraded.
Those answers matter because preventing dangerous individuals from moving freely is just as important as arresting them when they return.
The government says the new identity law and integrated database will strengthen border security, reduce identity fraud and improve intelligence sharing.
That is encouraging if it delivers consistent results, because technology is only as effective as the institutions using it.
Nigeria cannot afford a future where terrorists travel more smoothly than ordinary citizens applying for passports, only to be welcomed home by an arrest committee at the arrival hall.
If the system is finally waking up, the hope is that it also learns to keep one eye on the departure gate.
