The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into an allegation of sexual abuse involving Captain Etim Essien, a serving officer at the Headquarters of 3 Division, Jos.
The Army said it was aware of reports circulating online concerning the alleged incident and had initiated appropriate steps to establish the facts surrounding the matter.
The Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division, Lt. Col. Olumide Victor Olukoya, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday.
According to the statement, the Army takes allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons, with utmost seriousness.
“Accordingly, appropriate steps have been initiated to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the reported incident,” the Army said.
It cautioned members of the public against reaching definitive conclusions on the culpability or otherwise of any individual while the investigation is ongoing.
The Army said it remained committed to due process, fairness and the protection of the rights and dignity of all parties involved.
It also disclosed that relevant civil authorities were investigating the matter, assuring that it would cooperate fully with them to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation in accordance with extant laws and regulations.
The statement said the Army placed a high premium on discipline, professionalism and respect for human dignity.
It added that any personnel found to have acted contrary to the law or established service regulations would be dealt with appropriately after the conclusion of the investigation.
The Army urged members of the public to refrain from speculation and the circulation of unverified information capable of prejudicing the investigation.
It also appealed for restraint to protect the privacy and wellbeing of those involved, particularly any minor who may be connected to the case.
“Further information will be provided as appropriate, subject to the requirements of the law and the integrity of the investigative process,” the statement added.
