Ekiti-born teenage tennis sensation Seun Ogunsakin has qualified for the main draw of the Wimbledon Junior Championships after defeating Canada’s Benjamin Azar 6-3, 6-1 in the final round of qualifying.
The 17-year-old produced a commanding performance against the tournament’s eighth seed at Roehampton, London, to secure one of the coveted places in the boys’ singles main draw.
The victory marks a major milestone for Nigerian tennis, with Ogunsakin becoming the first Nigerian in decades to qualify for the main draw of a junior Grand Slam tournament.
His qualification also leaves him as the only African player to progress from the qualification rounds into the main draw.
Ogunsakin’s straight-sets victory over Azar underlined his growing reputation on the international junior circuit as he continued his impressive run with another dominant display.
The Nigerian teenager, popularly known as “Seun Shark,” controlled the contest from start to finish, dropping only four games on his way to sealing a historic qualification.
His achievement is expected to provide a significant boost for Nigerian tennis, with the youngster now set to compete among the world’s best junior players at Wimbledon.
The victory also represents another landmark moment for Nigerian tennis, ending a decades-long wait for a homegrown player to feature in the main draw of a junior Grand Slam championship.
