At least nine Buddhist monks have died after an 11-year-old boy allegedly drove his parents’ pickup truck into a religious procession in Mukdahan Province.
According to police, the child reportedly took the vehicle without his parents’ permission and drove approximately 10 kilometres before losing control and crashing into the group of monks.
Five monks were pronounced dead at the scene, while four others later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Several people also sustained injuries in the incident.
Authorities said the boy is in shock following the crash, and an investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
