NNPC Limited has renewed its partnership with TotalEnergies to extend the deployment of the Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications (AUSEA) technology for an additional 24 months, as part of efforts to detect, measure, and reduce methane and carbon emissions across its upstream operations.
The renewed agreement is aimed at supporting NNPC Ltd’s gas flare reduction obligations in line with its commitments under the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), participation in the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0, and its ambition to achieve near-zero methane emissions by 2030.

The agreement follows an earlier deal signed in 2023 for the adoption of the AUSEA technology and was executed on Wednesday at the NNPC Towers in Abuja.
NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President, Upstream, Mr. Udy Ntia, signed on behalf of the national oil company, while TotalEnergies Country Chair and Managing Director, Mr. Matthieu Bouyer, signed for the energy firm.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ntia expressed satisfaction with the results achieved during the first phase of the technology’s deployment and called for its expansion across additional assets.
He described the renewed partnership as a significant step in NNPC Ltd’s decarbonization journey.
“Today’s signing represents a practical step in NNPC Limited’s journey to build a credible, transparent and action-oriented decarbonization programme. Through the AUSEA initiative, we are strengthening our ability to detect, quantify and prioritise methane abatement opportunities using advanced measurement technology,” Ntia said.
He also advocated the institutionalisation of progress reporting in line with compliance requirements and highlighted the need to explore opportunities for technology transfer to deepen local capacity.
On his part, TotalEnergies Senior Vice President, Africa, Mr. Mike Sangster, expressed satisfaction with the longstanding collaboration between both organisations.
According to him, TotalEnergies was the first oil-producing company in Nigeria to eliminate routine gas flaring across all its assets, noting that the AUSEA technology played a critical role in achieving that milestone.
Sangster added that the company remains committed to achieving near-zero methane emissions by 2030 and views the partnership with NNPC Ltd as a key component of that objective.
AUSEA is a drone-based emissions monitoring technology jointly developed by TotalEnergies, the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and the University of Reims.
The technology is designed to identify previously unaccounted emission sources, improve the accuracy of emissions reporting, provide data for reviewing operational systems and implementing corrective actions, and support the estimation of flare combustion efficiency.
Industry stakeholders believe the continued deployment of the technology will strengthen methane emissions management, enhance environmental performance, and support Nigeria’s broader energy transition and decarbonization goals.
