A bizarre incident in Edo State almost halted a funeral after the family of a deceased woman discovered that her eyes were missing upon collecting her body from the mortuary.
According to MC Oviakpo, a friend of the deceased’s husband, the family was shocked to find the eyes absent when they arrived to take the corpse for burial. They immediately demanded an explanation from the mortuary attendants.

The mortuary staff claimed the eyes had dissolved due to the chemicals used to wash the body. However, the grieving family rejected this explanation and insisted that the body must be returned in the same complete condition the husband married her in with both eyes intact before any funeral could proceed.
Tensions escalated until a doctor was invited to examine the body. After a thorough check, the doctor confirmed that the eyes had indeed been affected by the embalming chemicals and the woman’s prolonged nine-month stay in the mortuary.
Following the medical explanation, the family eventually agreed to proceed with the funeral.
The incident has sparked conversations online about mortuary practices, the handling of corpses, and the emotional stress families face during burials in Nigeria.
