NPFL Matchday 7: Rangers face derby test as Rivers United close in

Rangers lead at the top, but unbeaten Rivers United are just one point behind. Barau FC remain in the mix, while Enyimba are suddenly showing signs of life.

The Nigeria Premier Football League title race takes another intriguing turn this weekend, as Matchday 7 brings together title contenders, ambitious challengers, and clubs eager to improve their fortunes.

Just one point separates Rangers from unbeaten Rivers United, while Barau FC are also lurking with the same 12-point haul as Rivers.

And behind the leading pack, Enyimba’s emphatic 4-2 victory over Shooting Stars has finally given the Aba giants something to build on, while several clubs at the other end of the table are already feeling the pressure to turn promising performances into points.

With Kano Pillars and Sporting Lagos opening the weekend on Saturday, the rest of Matchday 7 serves up a nine-game Sunday programme that could significantly reshape the standings.

Rangers put top spot and South-East bragging Rights on the Line

Rangers return to action as league leaders, but there will be little room for complacency when they face Abia Warriors in Awka.

The Flying Antelopes climbed back to the summit after a crucial 1-0 victory over Warri Wolves in their rescheduled midweek fixture.

It was exactly the response they needed after their previous defeat to Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

Now comes another test, and this one carries the extra spice of a South-East derby, as Abia Warriors arrive with confidence after recording their first home victory of the campaign, a commanding 3-0 triumph over Bendel Insurance.

Imama Amapakabo’s side will believe they can trouble Rangers, particularly after ending their wait for a convincing result.

Recent meetings between the rivals underline how competitive this fixture has become. Rangers have won three of their last six encounters, Abia Warriors have won two, while one ended in a draw.

So while Rangers will be defending first place, Abia Warriors will be chasing much more than three points. This is a derby for momentum, pride and bragging rights.

Meanwhile, another subplot to Rangers’ challenge is that the club continues to play away from its traditional Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium home because of renovation work.

Their home fixtures have already taken them to the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta and the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.

This time, the Awka Township Stadium provides the setting. That lack of a permanent home could potentially favour Abia Warriors, who will not have to contend with the intimidating atmosphere Rangers traditionally enjoy at the Cathedral in Enugu.

But Rangers have shown enough resilience to suggest they can overcome the inconvenience; more importantly, they now have the confidence of sitting at the top of the table.

Rivers United: Unbeaten, Second and running out of breathing space

If Rangers are under pressure to stay top, Rivers United are applying it from immediately behind.

The Pride of Rivers remain unbeaten after six matches, with three wins and three draws giving them 12 points, just one behind the leaders. But Sunday’s clash against Ikorodu City presents a different kind of challenge.

Rivers United have been forced into a demanding schedule, with the encounter against Ikorodu City coming after a quick succession of matches against Ranchers Bees and Katsina United.

Their latest outing produced a 1-1 draw against Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, as Samson Olasupo put Rivers ahead after the break before former Rivers United midfielder Sani Mubarak’s deflected free-kick restored parity.

Now the Port Harcourt side must find enough energy to maintain their unbeaten start. At this stage of the season, dropping points is not necessarily disastrous.

But when Rangers are only one point ahead, every dropped point gives the leaders a little more breathing space.

With eight points from six matches, the Oga Boys have two wins, two draws and two defeats. A victory against Rivers United would be another major statement and could pull them closer to the leading group.

For Rivers, however, the objective is simple: protect their unbeaten record and keep Rangers within striking distance.

One of the biggest storylines away from the top two comes from Aba, where Enyimba finally got their campaign moving with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Shooting Stars.

For a club of Enyimba’s stature, the opening weeks of the season had been unusually frustrating as the nine-time NPFL champions have struggled badly for goals, points, and consistency. But the emphatic victory in Aba reminded everyone of what they can do when in full flow.

Now they face Plateau United at the Enyimba Stadium. The away side will not arrive merely to admire the surroundings. They come into the contest after beating Inter Lagos 2-0 and will be looking to build on that result.

For Enyimba, however, the challenge is bigger than simply winning another home game. They must prove the Shooting Stars victory was the beginning of a revival rather than an isolated flash of brilliance.
