The National Universities Commission, NUC, has granted a permanent operational licence to Franco-British International University, FBIU, Kaduna, allowing it to operate as a private university in Nigeria.
The licence was presented to the President of FBIU, Prof. Abdullahi Sabo Muhammad, by the Director of Inspection and Monitoring, Justina Emerole, on behalf of the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu.
The commission said the approval followed the university’s fulfilment of the requirements stipulated in the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act, Cap E3, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, as well as the successful completion of its mandatory probationary period.
Dated July 10, 2026, the licence enables FBIU to operate statutorily as a private university in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the NUC has approved a two-year extension of the probationary period attached to the provisional operational licence of the Canadian University of Nigeria (CUN), Abuja.
The extension, effective from July 10, 2026, is intended to enable the university to commence academic activities and consolidate its institutional development.
The approval was conveyed in a letter dated July 23, 2026, following a comprehensive review of the university’s activities by an NUC team from April 23 to 25, 2026.
The review assessed the university’s compliance with requirements for the establishment and operation of private universities in Nigeria, including the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards, CCMAS.
After considering the findings and recommendations of the review team, the NUC approved the two-year extension.
The commission directed CUN to expedite preparations for the commencement of academic activities within the extension period.
It also urged the university to sustain progress made in the renovation and remodelling of its facilities.
The NUC said it would conduct a follow-up verification visit at the expiration of the extension to assess the university’s compliance with the conditions of its provisional operational licence.
The extension marks another step in the institutional development of the Canadian University of Nigeria as it prepares to commence academic activities under the regulatory oversight of the NUC.
