The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, has summoned native doctors, traditional priests and priestesses to an urgent palace meeting over the worsening insecurity in Edo State.
The meeting, according to a statement issued by the Benin Traditional Council, is scheduled to hold at 12 noon on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the Oba’s palace in Benin City.
The statement, signed by Victor Nosakhare on behalf of the Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, said the emergency gathering was convened under the directive of the monarch and must be treated with utmost urgency by all invited stakeholders.
It noted that the engagement is aimed at exploring traditional mechanisms to complement government and security agencies’ efforts in addressing the rising wave of kidnapping, cult-related violence and other criminal activities in the state.
Although details of the agenda were not disclosed, the palace said the move became necessary in view of the escalating security challenges affecting communities across the kingdom and beyond.
In a related development, the Benin Traditional Council also announced a separate meeting with youth leaders known as Okaighele, scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the same venue and time.
The back-to-back consultations underscore renewed efforts by the Benin monarchy to strengthen community-based responses and support formal security operations amid growing concerns over public safety in Edo State.
Authorities and residents in parts of the state have continued to raise alarm over incidents of kidnapping, cult clashes and other violent crimes, prompting calls for wider collaboration among traditional institutions, security agencies and community leaders.
