The Delta State Police Command has said the body of Oghenemine Ogidi, a young man allegedly killed by police officers, is not missing but currently deposited in a mortuary within the state.
The clarification followed reports circulating on social media claiming that the deceased’s family had been denied access to his remains and that the police could not account for the body.
Reacting to the claims, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, dismissed the reports as false and misleading.
In a post on his official X handle on Friday, Edafe stated that the remains are available and accessible to the family.
“His body is at the mortuary, and the family have been told that whenever they want to see it, they will be allowed to,” he wrote.
He explained that the matter is being treated as a suspected murder case, which legally requires further examination.
“It’s a case of suspected murder, so an autopsy is compulsory, and the family also agreed to this,” he added.
Ogidi, a 28-year-old musician, was reportedly shot dead in broad daylight in Effurun.
The police command confirmed that the officer allegedly responsible, ASP Nuhu Usman, has been arrested and moved to the Force Headquarters for further disciplinary action.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the immediate dismissal and prosecution of those involved in the incident.
