The Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic (OOPOLY), Aba, Abia State, Engr. Dr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, has promised scholarships for three students of the institution who distinguished themselves at the Rising Gem Talent Discovery Show.
Kalu announced the scholarship for the 2026/2027 academic session when the newly elected Students’ Union Government (SUG) executives, led by the 33rd president, Comrade Ezekiel Effiong Etim, paid him a courtesy visit.
He said the gesture was aimed at rewarding excellence and encouraging students to develop their talents.
The three students participated in the talent show hosted by the wife of the Abia State Governor, Mrs Priscilla Chidinma Otti, on October 16 at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia.
Commending their performances, the Rector praised the students for their courage, confidence and ability to showcase their talents before distinguished personalities.
Etim thanked Kalu for ensuring a peaceful electoral process and commended the Abia State Government for its developmental efforts at the institution.
He pledged that the new executives would discharge their responsibilities diligently and announced plans for a solidarity march in support of Governor Alex Otti and his administration.
The SUG executives also presented their proposed budget and activities for the 2026/2027 academic session, including departmental presidential elections and a leadership summit.
Responding, Kalu urged the student leaders to uphold the institution’s rules and values and conduct themselves responsibly.
He said his administration was committed to positioning the polytechnic among Africa’s leading institutions, adding that cultism and the sale of textbooks would not be tolerated.
The Rector further announced that examination results would be uploaded to the institution’s online portal on Wednesday.
He urged the student leaders to support the institution’s development and continue praying for the state government.
