Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has directed the immediate rehabilitation of Ibeama Primary School, Ndume Otuka, Umuahia North, the school attended by Nigeria’s former Military Head of State, the late General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi.
The governor also ordered an assessment of the community road leading to the late General’s residence, with a view to commencing its rehabilitation.
Otti gave the directives on Saturday during a civic reception held in honour of the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Nmeregini, at Ibeama Primary School, Ndume Otuka.
Responding to requests presented by community leaders, the governor said the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Oti, would inspect the road and submit a report, while the Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) was directed to begin arrangements for the school’s rehabilitation immediately.
“We have taken note of the requests. The Commissioner for Works will inspect the road leading to General Ironsi’s house and report back to me.
“On the school, we are carrying out a comprehensive rehabilitation of schools across the state. The Chairman of ASUBEB is hereby directed to return here by Monday to begin the process of fast-tracking the rehabilitation of the school,” Otti said.
The governor reiterated that his administration is implementing a statewide programme to rehabilitate schools across the 17 local government areas of Abia State.
He thanked the people for their support and confidence in his administration, assuring them that his government would remain committed to delivering impactful projects and quality governance.
“Our promise is that we will not stop. Nothing will stop us from serving the people. We appreciate your support and your commitment to stand with us in the future,” he said.
Earlier, community leaders, including President-General of the Ndume Otuka Development Union, Deacon Okezie Onyemauwa, and Elder Chimezie Ndukwe, praised the governor for what they described as his transformational leadership and people-centred policies.
They commended the developmental projects executed across the state and pledged their continued support for Governor Otti ahead of the 2027 general elections. They also appealed for the rehabilitation of the road leading to the late General Aguiyi-Ironsi’s residence and the renovation of Ibeama Primary School.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Nmeregini thanked Governor Otti for attending the reception despite his busy schedule, describing his presence as a demonstration of his commitment to the people.
He said the governor’s performance had won the support of many political stakeholders, including some who were previously in the opposition, adding that they would continue to back his administration.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Senator Darlington Nwokocha, House of Representatives member Rt. Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, Secretary to the State Government Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole, members of the State Executive Council, and other stakeholders.
