A gas explosion at a roadside gas vendor’s shop near Liberty Junction in Kubwa, Abuja, on Sunday morning shook nearby buildings and overturned a traffic warden’s booth at the junction.
The blast was felt across parts of Kubwa, including Dantata Estate, where residents said their buildings shook. The ground around Liberty Junction also bore signs of the explosion.
Residents who spoke to THE WHISTLER said the blast occurred in the early hours of Sunday and was loud enough to wake people from sleep.
“The explosion was loud enough to wake people from their sleep, and we could feel the buildings shaking. Everyone was wondering what had happened,” one resident said.
The cause of the explosion had not been established as of the time of filing this report. Some residents suspected gas cylinders or other flammable materials may have been involved, but THE WHISTLER could not independently verify this.
A video seen by THE WHISTLER showed thick smoke rising from the scene as residents and passersby gathered around the affected area.
Residents also reported hearing fire service sirens, and THE WHISTLER gathered that fire service operatives responded to the scene.
It is not yet confirmed whether anyone was injured or killed at the time of filing this report.
