Abubakar argued that public confidence in the commission could be affected if its actions appear to contradict court decisions, he pointed to the lingering leadership dispute within the PDP as an example of why some Nigerians are beginning to question the commission’s impartiality.
According to the lawyer, the controversy surrounding the party has continued despite a Supreme Court judgment that he said went against the faction linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, he expressed concern that INEC still recognizes and engages with that faction, a situation he believes has created doubts about the commission’s commitment to fairness.
Abubakar stated that electoral institutions must remain independent and be seen to operate without political influence, he stressed that Nigerians expect INEC to treat all political parties equally and to act strictly within the law when dealing with internal disputes and electoral matters.
The legal practitioner noted that trust in the electoral process is essential for democracy to thrive, he warned that when citizens begin to question the actions of election management bodies, it can weaken confidence in future elections and discourage public participation.
