Police Arraign Moses Binchang Over Alleged N5m Theft

The Police have arraigned a 27-year-old man, Moses Binchang, before an Ikeja Magistrate Court over alleged theft of electronics and air conditioner units valued at N5,000,000 in Abule-Egba, Lagos.

According to the charge filed by the Commissioner of Police, Binchang was brought before the court on a two-count charge of felony and stealing contrary to the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

In Count I, the prosecution alleged that Binchang, between April 23 and April 26, 2026, at about 11:00hrs at No. 65, Santos Avenue, Abule-Egba, within the Ikeja Magisterial District, did commit a felony to wit stealing. The offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

In Count II, the Police alleged that on the same date, time, and place, the defendant stole one JBC Speaker, one DVD Car Stereo, three units of water heater, one electronic step-down device, and eight outdoor units of air conditioner valued at N5,000,000.00. The items were said to be the property of one Oluwatosin Sanusi. The offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The charge sheet was signed by CSP Aliyu Kawunda. Investigation was handled by IPO ASP Olanlokun Modinat of the New Oko Oba Division.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, SP Josephine Ihkayere, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove the allegations.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. L.A. Owolabi, granted him bail with two sureties, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment.

The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the Correctional Center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.

Legal experts say that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
