The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a parent and two other suspects over the alleged killing of a primary school teacher, Mariam Usman, after she reportedly disciplined an 11-year-old pupil in Olamaboro Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lokoja, saying the suspects were arrested following an investigation by detectives from the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department.
According to the police, the investigation began after a report was received on June 25 and revealed that Usman was first attacked on June 17 at her residence by the father of one of her pupils for allegedly disciplining his son during school hours.
Saliu said the teacher was assaulted again later the same day while on her way to a mosque to observe prayers. She identified the second attacker as Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo.
The police spokesperson added that the assault continued the following day when Mary Ojonojima, younger sister of Ramatu, allegedly stormed Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka and attacked the teacher at her workplace.
Usman was initially treated at Grace Clinic in Ugbamaka before she was referred to Eleojo Clinic in Okpo for further treatment. She, however, died on June 25 from injuries allegedly sustained during the attacks.
Police said investigations established a prima facie case of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide against the three suspects identified as Abdullahi Isiaka, Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo and Ojonojima Mary.
“The suspects will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction for prosecution,” Saliu said.
The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Naziru Kankarofi, commended homicide detectives for what he described as their professionalism and diligence in handling the case.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice and urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
Kankarofi also appealed to members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support crime prevention and effective policing.
The police said investigations into the case had been concluded and the suspects would be charged to court accordingly.
