Police Explain Arraignment Of Man That Filmed Enugu Thuggery Attack

The Enugu State Police Command says reports that it arrested and arraigned one Ani Samuel Chidi for filming the reported attack and disruption of an NDC party meeting at Obuoffia-Awkunanaw, and releasing an alleged APC hitman responsible for the attack is false.

The command disclosed this in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe. The command stated that “the report is false and misleading, and represents a deliberate attempt to distort the facts of a criminal case investigated against the suspect and to discredit the police”.

Ndukwe said, “The facts are that on 12th September 2026, Ozalla Police Division received a complaint from Ani Nnabuike, Aninwene Monday and others against Ani Samuel Chidi, alleging cyberbullying and threatening violence following his recording and publication of the reported attack and disruption of an NDC party meeting at Obuoffia-Awkunanaw, Enugu.”

He said following preliminary investigation, the case was transferred to the State CID, where it was established that Ani Samuel Chidi had not only recorded and published the reported incident, but had also circulated other videos falsely accusing the initial complainants, as well as Hon USA Igwesi and Solomon Ifeanyi Nwobodo of carrying out the attack and disruption.

The command claimed that the suspect further falsely alleged in the videos that “Mr Igwesi is a drug dealer who sent the attackers to shoot and kill his own people in Obuoffia, and that he and his family have kept the community under siege”.

The statement explained that during investigation, the suspect was unable to substantiate the allegations contained in the published videos, hence, “he was consequently arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in Enugu State for cyberbullying and threatening violence and remanded in Correctional Custody by the court”.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the case concerning the alleged attack and disruption of the NDC party meeting is separate from the cybercrime case against Ani Samuel Chidi and remains under investigation at Zone 13 Headquarters, Ukpo-Dunukofia, Anambra State,” the command said.

It urged members of the public to disregard any narrative suggesting that the police arrested Ani Samuel Chidi “merely for filming the incident or that an alleged perpetrator of the attack was released in exchange for his arrest”.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, in the statement, reiterated the command’s commitment to providing a level playing field for all political parties and actors in the dtate. Giwa urged political actors to maintain peace and channel security concerns through appropriate authorities rather than resorting to the media or engaging in acts that may constitute cybercrimes.
