The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, disclosed this in a statement issued in Kaduna on Sunday.
Hassan said the incident happened at about 4am on November 7, when armed men invaded the village, stole cows belonging to three Fulani herders and shot a 25-year-old man, Abubakar, in both legs.
He said the Divisional Police Officer of Rigachikun Division received a distress call about the attack from a resident, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, at about 5am.
“On receipt of the report, a combined team of police operatives led by the Officer-in-Charge, Amana Outpost, local vigilantes and villagers swiftly mobilised, pursued the suspects into the bush and engaged them in a gun duel,” Hassan said.
According to him, the suspected cattle rustlers abandoned the 39 cows and escaped into the bush with gunshot injuries.
The police spokesman said the injured victim was taken to Shika Teaching Hospital, where he was responding to treatment.
He added that the recovered cows had been returned to their rightful owners.
Hassan said the Commissioner of Police, CP Muhammad Rabiu, praised the officers for their bravery and commended members of the community for supporting the security operatives.
The commissioner also assured residents that the command would sustain efforts to tackle cattle rustling and other criminal activities across the state.
