The United States Government has provided reasons for its recent cancellation of visas issued to Nigerians and other foreign nationals.
A spokesperson for the US Embassy said the move is aimed at protecting national security and public safety. Every prospective visitor undergoes interagency security vetting, and the Department of State continuously reviews the status of all more than 55 million holders of valid US visas.
The Embassy explained that visas are revoked in cases where a foreign visitor overstays their lawful period of admission, engages in criminal activity, provides support to terrorist organisations, or otherwise violates US law.
The cancellations, which cite Title 22, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 41.122, are part of the Department’s longstanding authority under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), enabling consular officers to revoke visas when new information suggests potential ineligibility.
The Embassy emphasised that while the authority to revoke visas has existed for decades, the scale of revocations has recently increased to strengthen border security and safeguard American communities.
