Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has said the proposed Lagos Tenancy Bill seeks to balance the interests of landlords and tenants while resolving housing disputes across the state.
The bill, currently before the State House of Assembly, was highlighted by the governor during the inauguration of the Sunny Ajose Housing Estate in Ajara, Badagry.
Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu said the legislation was designed to “protect tenants and landlords alike” and promote a fair, transparent rental system.
“Everybody wants to be a landlord. But you must also have tenants who can survive and pay rent. The new law seeks a working partnership between both parties so that landlords earn income and tenants live decently,” he explained.
The governor noted that the bill aims to reduce housing conflicts, streamline tenancy agreements, and prevent property owners from exploiting tenants through unfair charges or evictions.
He also highlighted the state government’s ongoing housing initiatives, including rent-to-own and rent-to-live schemes, which are helping residents transition into home ownership. Sanwo-Olu promised to strengthen these programs under the new legal framework.
“We are encouraging everyone to take advantage of the rent-to-own initiative. The goal is to make housing affordable and sustainable for every Lagos resident,” he said.
The governor assured that Lagos’ housing reforms would continue to address affordability, accessibility, and equity, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The tenancy bill is a continuation of that partnership, a system where the government, landlords, and tenants all win,” Sanwo-Olu added.
