The Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, has demanded an independent investigation into the deaths of 37 miners who allegedly died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Minna, Niger State.
The party also criticised the government over its handling of insecurity in the North Central and North West regions, particularly the continued abduction of residents by bandits.
The PRP made its position known in a statement issued on Saturday, September 19, 2026, by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammed Ishaq.
The party said it was particularly concerned about the government’s inability to secure the release of residents of Dekara community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State who were reportedly kidnapped by bandits in August.
According to the PRP, the prolonged captivity of the victims reflected what it described as a failure by the government to adequately protect citizens and their property.
“The Peoples Redemption Party wishes to express its profound disappointment regarding the failure of the government to secure the release of hostages kidnapped by bandits since August 2026 in Dekara community, Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State,” the statement said.
The party said the incident reinforced its position that the government had failed in what it described as its primary responsibility of protecting the lives and property of Nigerians.
It condemned the continued attacks, kidnappings and other security breaches, warning that the worsening situation across parts of North Central and North West Nigeria could develop into a broader national security challenge if not urgently addressed.
The PRP urged the government to intensify efforts to tackle banditry and kidnapping while ensuring that security personnel found culpable of negligence or misconduct were held accountable.
It also called for policies aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians and restoring peace and security across the affected communities.
Beyond the kidnapping crisis, the party condemned the deaths of 37 miners who, according to its statement, died while in NSCDC custody in Minna.
The PRP demanded the immediate establishment of an independent commission of inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
It said the inquiry should establish what led to the deaths and determine whether any individuals or institutions should be held responsible.
The party also called for the prosecution of anyone found culpable after the investigation.
The demand comes amid ongoing official investigations into the deaths of suspected illegal miners detained by the NSCDC in Niger State.
The PRP said an independent investigation was necessary to establish accountability and provide justice for the victims and their families.
“As a party committed to justice and good governance, we implore all relevant authorities to take decisive action to address these pressing security issues and uphold the dignity and safety of every Nigerian citizen,” it said.
The party reiterated its call for stronger action against insecurity, stressing that government must combine security operations with accountability and policies capable of addressing the welfare and safety concerns of citizens.
